Tigray Region Interim Governor Getachew Reda has set up a team to investigate the alleged theft of aid in the region. Mr. Getachew appointed Mr. Fisha Kidanun to lead the four-member team.

The decision of the Tigray region’s title administration came after the World Food Program, a part of the United Nations, stopped providing food aid to the Tigray region. The World Food Program (WFP) has suspended its aid delivery in Tigray to investigate the alleged theft of food aid to beneficiaries a few weeks ago.

Ato Getachew Reda tasked the newly formed team to investigate the alleged theft in the region under his leadership and to hold those involved in the matter accountable. Information from the Tigray region, especially Mekelle, indicates that it has become common to see relief goods being sold in shops.

After announcing the suspension of assistance from the World Food Program in the region, the United States Agency for Development (USAID) announced the termination of the same assistance through its administrator Samantha Power. When Power announced this, the organization made difficult decisions because the help collected from taxpayers should reach only those who deserve it. Head of Tigray’s Interim Administration, Mr. Reda, said that he is ready to take action by saying that we need to examine ourselves for the issue that has arisen.

It will be remembered that the parties involved in the bloody civil war that has been going on for two years in northern Ethiopia and stopped at the end of last October were accused of stealing food aid and providing it to their fighters.
